Why I'm running...

We are the only pro sports team in the U.S. to offer season ticket holders a voice in club matters. My career in digital and social media at Razorfish/Microsoft provides me excellent connections from which to listen to the fans on digital and social networks like Twitter, Facebook, forums, soundoffs and blogs...to ensure your opinions are heard loud and clear by the Front Office. I will work to support the best interests of all fans regardless of age or affiliation.

There have already been some great ideas, and also some concerns raised by fans, and I look forward to sharing them with the Council and the Front Office, and acting as an inpartial representative for the fans. Thanks for your support!

Scarves Up! Rachel Molloy

About me...

I sit in section 130, live in West Seattle and have been coaching, playing and cheering the game of soccer for over 15 years. Growing up in the Midwest, soccer and women’s teams were rare. While in High School, I lobbied the School District, PTA and Principal to win approval for the creation of our District’s first Varsity Women’s soccer team. As a founding member and Team Captain, we trained our first year with the men’s team while awaiting approval and funding. Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of coaching some great little league teams and players in the sport I love. And for the past five years, I’ve been playing in the Co-Rec Soccer Association on the co-ed team "Field Hazard", which I currently manage.

I’ve experienced the atmosphere of European soccer stadiums, and know that Seattle has something to be proud of. Keep the energy going for our Sounders! Thank you for your support!

The Issues...

I'd like to see a survey go out at the end of the season to all season ticket holders, with items like seating capacity, horn bans, better section preferences for standing vs. sitting, all put to scaled preference vote. Fans should have a say on how they feel about the inaugural season, and I will work to encourage the Front Office and other council members to take action based on the will of all fans.

Expanded seating: I'd like the fans to have a direct say via survey...to see if season ticket holder's as a majority wish to see more seats opened up, and if that runs the risk of devaluing next year's season ticket renewals and leaving us with unfilled seats. There is currently demand for single ticket sales and money to be made...but additional seats should only be opened up if it is in the best interest of the club, the energy of the stadium and the fans long term. Another concern, is whether opening additional seats will lead to increased ticket scalping, and what the Club can do to help minimize that from happening. The front office has opened additional seats in General Admission section (previously under green tarps) as part of a partial season ticket package to help address the problem.

Alliance Voting: Next season, I'd love to see a per seat vote for Council Representative nominations. Adult fans were unfairly penalized for buying seats next to each other in groups when they are only given one vote, regardless of how many seats were purchased.

The Band: I think many fans really enjoy the band, myself included, especially during the March to the Match, pre-game, half-time and post-game. It's unique, it's loud...and they are good! But during the play of game, it would be helpful if they were able to support fan cheers as rhythm support, rather then performing as a pep band. And next year, a more appropriate placement would be in the Hawk's Nest. Kudos to the Front Office and Alliance Council for taking steps to alleviate the issue by moving the band out of GA seating were, currently, our loudest (continually singing) supporters reside.

Plastic Horns: The kids love them, but they hurt your ears if someone is blowing one close by. They add a buzz to the game that isn't the same as cheering. When the cheering dies down, they do keep the noise going in the stadium though. Again, I feel it's an issue that should go directly to the fans...if the majority is strongly opposed, discontinuing future sales or an outright ban might be called for.

Better Section Preferences: I believe some issues will be resolved next season based on lessons learned this year...in that those who are in the supporters section will have a better understanding of what that entails: flag waivers, singing, chanting, drums and standing. The supporters section has a huge impact on the stadium energy, and thus the play on the field, and I believe the supporters would like to see that encouraged. Seat reassignment should be available now. Don't be afraid to ask your Ticket Rep for help if you are unhappy with your current seats at games. In the future, better definitions for all sections, regarding standing vs. sitting preferences should be stressed.

Self-Managing Fans: There was outrage when Toronto fans threw beer at our players and Mr. Carey. Yet there were reports of the same happening at our own stadium against Kansas City. I want this club to remain something that we, and our city, can enjoy, take pride in and our families can feel safe attending. Throwing beers or other items on the field, flares, smoke bombs, disrespect of fellow fans or disruptive acts outside of the stadium should never be tolerated (Let Qwest staff assist if you see something).

Council Representatives: I'd also encourage those on the Council to take steps to make themselves more visible and available to the fans, separate from the Front Office. Setting up an Alliance Council website with contact information, council member bios, issue status, and news. Perhaps even armbands for Council Members to wear at games to help raise their visibility, so they are more available to receive input and feedback from the fans. While they will be working with the Front Office, there is work that can be done today to help put those communication channels in place. Keep up the good work guys!
